Abstract

The transformation of State Islamic Higher Education Institutions (PTKIN) during the Reform Era represents a strategic effort to reform Islamic higher education in order to enhance institutional quality and respond to the rapid development of science, technology, and societal needs. This study aims to analyze the background, forms, impacts, as well as the challenges and opportunities of PTKIN transformation in Indonesia. The research employs a library research method with a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were collected from relevant scientific journals, books, and official documents and analyzed through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that PTKIN transformation has been implemented through institutional changes from State Islamic Colleges (STAIN) to State Islamic Institutes (IAIN), and subsequently to State Islamic Universities (UIN), accompanied by the development of an integrated curriculum, improvement of human resource quality, strengthening of institutional governance, and enhancement of research and community service. These transformations have contributed positively to improving the quality of Islamic higher education, although challenges remain in ensuring equitable quality across institutions and adapting to technological advancements. On the other hand, government support and technological progress provide significant opportunities for PTKIN to further develop into competitive and internationally recognized Islamic higher education institutions
